A 5 element Yagi Antenna based on the ‘OWA’ Optimised Wideband Antenna design. For a number of years experimenters and designers (and in particular the wise words from W4RNL) have re-modelled a Yagi which give a very flat response over its operating bandwidth. The OWA design requires one additional director element to achieve the 50 Ohm feed point impedance compared to beams with feed point impedances in the 25 Ohm range. By placing this director closer towards the driven element, a flat low SWR curve is achieved at an impedance of around 50 ohms. This design suits those wishing a large operating bandwidth and wider-bands such as 10, 11 and 6m are well suited to this design.

This particular antenna has been re-modelled from the original OWA files by request from operators who are interested in both the 10 and 11m bands. The antenna model is designed to cover the nearly the whole of the 11m band from 26.285Mhz (26Mhz Calling Freq) up to 28Mhz. Coverage then continues into the 10m band covering both the CW and SSB sections. The antenna exhibits good gain throughout the whole range. For example; over 9.3dbi at 26.500Mhz, to nearly 9.8dbi at 27.555Mhz and over 10dbi at 28.000MHz. The SWR of this range is under 1.5 to 1 over the whole coverage. 2 to 1 SWR limits are even wider. Front to back ratio is over 16db for 75% of the band coverage and in the important ‘DX’ areas is >20db. Losses are also minimal as the system requires no matching device and can be connected directly to 50 ohm coax. We would however recommend including a 1 to 1 Current Balun at the feed point to prevent radiation of common-mode currents back down the feeder.

Like other antennas in the ‘Tornado’ range, this OWA is manufactured from lightweight but extremely strong construction grade 6082-T6 Aluminium stock with a heavy duty boom. The antenna includes Heavy Duty Element Brackets, Heavy Duty Polyamide Element Clamps and comes complete with M10 Stainless Steel Hardware.
Antenna is supplied with all hardware except boom to mast mount (see below).
